Riptides 2010 Coaching Staff
Dave Holland, Head Coach Dave returns for his tenth season at Ridgetop. He is a 1989 graduate of Indiana University, where he competed for 4 years as a butterflyer. In 1997, Dave received his M.Ed. from the University of Virginia. He is employed as a speech-language pathologist with Richmond City Schools. In the past he has coached swimming at Randolph-Macon College, Saint Gertrude High School, and Southampton. Dave and his wife Liz have two children, Abby and Hank. Lucy Carrig, Asst. Coach Lucy is new to our coaching staff this year, but is no stranger to Ridgetop, as she competed on the Ridgetop swim team from ages 7-12. She is completing her first year in pharmacy school at MCV, where she serves as President of the Class of 2013. In addition to Ridgetop, she competed with NOVA (10 years), University of Richmond (2 years), and UNC-Wilmington (2 years), where she graduated in 2007 with a degree in marine biology. She currently competes in U.S. Masters, and holds several state records. In the past, she has coached at Kanawha, Church Run, and Dominion Club. Lucy can be contacted at: lucycarrig@gmail.com.
Daniel Strait, Asst. Coach Daniel returns to Ridgetop after previously coaching as a part-time assistant coach in 2009, and after a phenomenal 10-year run as a Ridgetop swimmer. Daniel finished his career at Ridgetop last summer by setting team records in the 50 back, 100 breast, 50 fly, and 100 IM. He also has numerous listings on the Ridge Top Ten. He is finishing his freshman year at Virginia Tech, where he is enrolled in their top notch program in architecture. Daniel can be reached at: dstraitswim@vt.edu.
Katie Baxa, Asst. CoachKatie grew up at Ridgetop, joined the swim team in 1996 at age 5, and proved to be a dedicated and loyal Riptide for 14 consecutive years. She won the prestigious Robin Hersey award in 2007. In addition to Ridgetop, she also competed in USS swimming (7 years) and for Saint Gertrude High School (4 years), where she served as team captain as a senior. Katie is completing her freshman year at the University of Delaware, where she is studying Medical Laboratory Science and competing as a member of the Blue Hen club swim team. She brings valuable experience teaching swim lessons at the JCC (2009), and she will be working part-time for us, with a focus on instruction of the preteamers and novice swimmers. Michelle Markwith, Asst. Coach She's back!! Michelle joins us for her fourth summer as a valuable member of the coaching staff. A 2008 graduate of Randolph-Macon College, Michelle was a conference finalist and co-captain during her junior year, when the team won an ODAC championship. Known for her high energy level and outgoing style, she also brings years of experience with stroke technique. Michelle will be coaching part-time in the afternoons, and will also be available for her popular private swim lessons.
